According to my reading, Dickinson does not reflect nationality a state of
mind. Instead she perceives nationality as personified in certain myths and
structures of power and gender to which one will have to relate in order to
change them and make room for women writers within the powerful Americanism of

She was a great poet, Dickinson’s poetry was heavily influenced by the Metaphysical poets of seventeenth-century England, she was a prolific private poet, fewer than a dozen of her nearly eighteen hundred poems were published during her lifetime.
